Liebe Schwestern!

Die vierte Woche des Generalkapitels geht zu Ende und damit kommt diese bedeutsame Zeit in Paderborn zum Abschluss. Noch einmal sende ich Ihnen einen kleinen Bericht zu, in dem ich Sie wieder ein wenig an meinen Eindrücken teilnehmen lassen möchte.

Inhaltlich beschäftigten wir uns ab Montag im Zusammenhang mit dem Kapitel „Formation“ intensiv mit der Frage nach Weiterführung von Erneuerungskursen und mit Inhalten und Gestaltung „lebenslanger Fortbildung. Unserer Zusammenarbeit und dem Miteinander mit Laien und unseren Laien-Assoziierten widmeten wir ebenfalls viel Zeit. Sehr engagiert wurde auch über das Für und Wider einer Mitgliedschaft in so genannten „Nicht-Regierungsorganisationen“ diskutiert. Die Mitgliedschaft könnte uns als gesamte Kongregation einbinden in einen gemeinsamen Informations- und Aktionsfluss im Zusammenhang mit dem weltweiten Einsatz für Gerechtigkeit und Frieden.

Ein Thema, das uns in den nächsten Jahren verstärkt beschäftigen wird, war die Frage der anzupassenden oder zu verändernden Strukturen innerhalb der Kongregation, um weiterhin in guter Weise unserem Sendungsauftrag gerecht zu werden.

Eine Gruppe von Delegierten, die die Aufgabe übernommen hatte, das Kapitelsdokument zu schreiben, stellte zwischenzeitlich ihre Entwürfe vor, um Verbesserungen einzuarbeiten.

Das Dokument wird Ihnen sicher bald vorliegen und Ihnen viel von den Erfahrungen, vom Ablauf und von den Ergebnissen vermitteln, aber ebenso auch etwas von der Atmosphäre widerspiegeln, die die gesamten vier Wochen prägte. Wir alle haben den Eindruck, dass das Dokument inspirierende Impulse enthält und wir hoffen, dass etwas vom „Feuer“ des Kapitels überspringt.

Allmählich haben sich die unterschiedlichen „Webfäden“ zu einem vielfarbigen Werkstück zusammengefügt. Ich meine, dass dieses Bild vom Weben, das ich von der Plenarversammlung der Generaloberinnen in Rom im Mai dieses Jahres übernommen habe, auch treffend für den Ablauf unseres Kapitels ist.

Ja, wir haben viel miteinander gearbeitet, und die Betonung des „miteinander“ ist sehr bedeutsam, aber alles gemeinsame Nachdenken, Diskutieren und Beschlussfassen war immer eingebettet in stille Momente des Gebetes, der Meditation. Die tägliche heilige Messe mit kurzen Impulsen zu Lesung und Evangelium, die Pater Anthony, unser Moderator, jedes Mal überzeugend in Beziehung brachte zu unserer derzeitigen Situation, die morgendliche Anbetungszeit, die Präsentation der unterschiedlichen Jesusbilder, die für jeden Tag von einer anderen Schwester vorbereitet worden war... das waren die „Webfäden“, die dem ganzen Werk Halt und Struktur gaben und uns immer mehr in der Tiefe miteinander verbanden, so dass schließlich selbst die „Dreisprachigkeit“ nicht mehr als trennend empfunden wurde.

Unsere Kenntnisse, die wir von den Provinzen, respektive vom Generalat und von den Philippinen hatten, erfuhren durch die (zumeist Powerpoint-)Präsentationen eine deutliche Vertiefung und Erweiterung. Zu ihren Präsentationen hatten die Schwestern zusätzlich Symbole mitgebracht, die für das jeweilige Land typisch sind. Am Ende der vier Wochen war die Mitte des Festsaals damit nun gut ausgefüllt. Zusammen mit der Osterkerze und den sieben weiteren Kerzen, die gleichzeitig die Gaben des Heiligen Geistes und die Provinzen mit Generalat und Unit der Philippinen symbolisierten, hatten wir unsere gesamte Kongregation buchstäblich immer gut im Blick.

Die unterschiedlichen Elemente, die alle zum Generalkapitel gehörten, das waren die „Fäden“, mit denen „Farbe und Muster“ gewirkt wurden.

Ein Geschenk der besonderen Art machte uns am Freitagnachmittag eine der Übersetzerinnen. Sie hatte eine eigene Powerpoint-Präsentation vorbereitet, in der sie uns noch einmal Eindrücke, „Momentaufnahmen“ aus den vier Wochen des Kapitels zusammengestellt hatte. Dazu gehörten auch die Jesus-Bilder, die sie noch einmal an unseren Augen vorbei ziehen ließ. Damit auch die Schwestern „zu Hause“ einen Ein-Blick bekommen, hatte S. Melissa für alle Provinzen etc. eine DVD mit der gesamten Präsentation vorbereitet.

Am Samstagmorgen erwarten wir Herrn Weihbischof König für die Abschlussmesse. Darin wird unter anderem das Licht, dessen vielfältige Bedeutung uns durch unsere Arbeit wieder neu bewusst geworden ist, in verschiedenen Weisen zur Geltung kommen.

Im Laufe des Vormittages unterschreiben wir dann das Kapitelsdokument und beschließen offiziell das 22. Generalkapitel. Wie schon gesagt, die eigentliche Arbeit, nämlich die Umsetzung liegt noch vor uns und wird uns in den nächsten Jahren beschäftigen.

Gemeinsam mit den Mutterhausschwestern errichten wir schließlich innerhalb eines Wortgottesdienstes den Friedenspfahl im Binnenhof. Der Pfahl möge uns immer wieder neu daran erinnern, wie und wo wir unseren Beitrag zum Frieden leisten können.

An dieser Stelle möchte ich noch einmal ausdrücklich Dank sagen: zunächst Gott, dessen Geist wir deutlich unter uns gespürt haben, ebenso Ihnen, liebe Schwestern, die Sie uns mit Ihrem Gebet und Ihrem Interesse begleitet haben. Danken möchte ich ganz persönlich für das Vertrauen, das Sie mir in den vergangenen sechs Jahren geschenkt haben und wieder bereit sind zu geben.

Is it possible that our General Chapter is finished! The weeks have sped by as we look back. I hope that in some small way you have been able to be with us in prayer and by e mail. Thank you for all your prayers, sacrifices and love! It has been a good Chapter filled with love and understanding.

But let me go back and fill you in on the happenings of this, our last week. Last Sunday was the big opening of the Libori Fest and it poured rain. The procession was not able to go through the town as planned. That was the first time in 38 years that this has happened. However, the rain did not dampen the spirits of the people. The cathedral was packed, the singing was tremendous and I am sure the Saint was pleased. During the week we have had rain, one nice day and now today is perfect as hopefully will be tomorrow for the closing of this great event. Many of the Sisters have squeezed in some visits to the festivities during the week. It was a nice relaxation from our intense discussions.

This week we discussed our Renewal Program. Many good suggestions were given so that hopefully our renewals of the future will have a new look. Great stress was also placed on the personal responsibility of each sister for her own on going Formation.

Reconfiguration was another intense discussion this past week. You will be hearing the results from your delegates in the near future. It is a concern for all and will be looked at, studied and prayed over for the next years. Our smaller numbers and aging personnel remind us that we must take action in the entire Congregation.

Amid our discussion we had very enjoyable and informative presentations from Chile and Uruguay /Argentina. The daily reflection on the sisters personal images of Jesus kept us in a contemplative atmosphere. Fr. Tony contributed many good insights and has given us a beautiful paper on Eucharistic Lifestyle.

NGO´s was another presentation. That is about nongovernmental organizations working through the UN: It was an enlightening presentation by Sr. Juliana and Sr. Joan Daniel. It will hopefully bear fruit in the future. All fit so well with the treads of our Chapter presentations.

Several sessions were given to reading, discussing and revising the Chapter Document which the committee had prepared. I think you will all be pleased with the final version which you will be receiving.

Today was the solemn closing of the Chapter. We began with an inspiring Liturgy: The candles representing the provinces were carried in procession and placed around the altar. The paper flame that was attached to each candle was removed at the time of the intercessions and placed on a map. In the end it looked like the world was on fire with Christian Charity as all of us do what love requires. The Archbishop gave a beautiful homily on the theme of our Chapter, Be a living reflection of Jesusáction in the world.

After breakfast we assembled at Mother Pauline´s grave to thank her for her loving concern for us during the Chapter. We all lit a candle and carried it back to the chapter room where Sr. Adalberta gave her final talk. I believe you can read it on the web site. After all of us gave each other a blessing we proceeded to Chapel where the service for the establishing of the peace pole began. After several readings and a solemn liturgical dance concerning bringing water of life to all we processed to the peace pole. This is located in the area out side the Retreat House. It has various languages asking the Lord for peace: English, German, Italian, Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese and Braille. Prayers from various religions were offered and hymns sung. It was a beautiful ending to our Chapter.

Of course traditional photographs were taken. The German Province is having a movie made for the province, not just of the Chapter but it will be a section of it. Therefore the film company followed us around this morning.

Now I will end my visits with you. All travellers leave on Monday or Tuesday. Tuesday will find the Generalate back in Rome. Thank you again for all your loving prayers. Now all that remains is for us to practice what we have written. Your delegates will bring not only the written word but also the spirit of love and enthusiasm that radiated from the Chapter participants.

Muy queridas Hermanas,

Hoy hemos terminado nuestro mes de trabajo y el Capítulo General ha sido clausurado esta mañana. Tuvimos la Eucaristía con uno de los Sres. Obispos Auxiliares de Paderborn en la Capilla de la Casa Madre. En la procesión de entrada llevamos los siete cirios que se usaron también al comienzo del Capítulo. Durante las intercesiones, cada una de las Hermanas asignadas sacó del cirio una llama hecha en papel, para colocarla en un mapa que indicaba los lugares gerográficos donde están las SCC. Eran siete, representando a las cinco provincias, el generalato y Filipinas, La homilía del Sr. Obispo fue muy hermosa, Recibimos la traducción en Inglés y Español. Nos hizo un llamado a la misión y a seguir a Cristo con alegría y entusiasmo, confiando en su palabra de vida, para ser MEMORIA VIVIENTE DE LA VIDA Y OBRA DE JESUS:

Después del desayuno fuimos a hacer una oración a la Tumba de la Madre Paulina llevando otra vela que nos regaló la Hna. Antonie al comienzo del Capítulo, con un porta-vela hecho por su hermano. Allí rezamos y cantamos, recordando a cada una de nuestras Hermanas en distintas partes del mundo. La Madre Paulina nos cuida desde aquí y a su vez está con nosotras donde estemos porque somos sus hijas y vivimos de acuerdo a su ejemplo, ¿verdad?

Siguió luego la sesión final en que firmamos el Documento del Capítulo. La Hna. Adalberta dirigió unas palabras de agradecimiento al Padre Tony y a todas las Hermanas participantes, de acuerdo a su trabajo específico. Finalmente nos bendijimos una a la otra, lo cual fue muy emotivo.

Quedaba aún otra ceremonia, por eso fuimos a la Capilla a las 11.00, y acompañadas de las Hermanas de la Comunidad de la Casa Madre, comenzamos el rito de la PAZ, con oraciones y una danza meditativa, muy hermosamente realizada por 10 Hermanas en el presbiterio. De allí salimos al jardín donde ya estaba plantado el Poste de la Paz. Siete Hermanas llevábamos un cartel con la escritura correspondiente: QUE LA PAZ PREVALEZCA EN LA TIERRA;escrito en sietre idiomas. Alemán; Inglés, Español, Italiano, Tagalog, Vietnamita y Braile. Cada placa fue clavada alrededor del poste. Rezamos una serie de oraciones por la paz, según varias religiones.: Judía, Musulmana, Budista, de Pueblos Nativos de USA, y Ecuménica, siguiendo el ejemplo del Papa Juan Pablo II que en Asís inauguró esta hermosa tradición de oraciones por la paz según diversas religiones. Al final plantamos una semilla cada una en un tiesto preparado junto al poste, rezando en silencio una oración personal por la paz.

Nos reunimos de nuevo para el almuerzo, pero antes tuvimos que posar para fotógrafos de DER DOM y otras dos personas que están filmando un video encargado por la Provincia de Alemania para actualizar el que tenían anteriormente. Va a contener mucho sobre el Capítulo. Depués del almuerzo ya tenían entrevistas programadas para el mismo video, a la Hna. Adalberta y a las Superioras Perovinciales.

Esta tarde tendremos una cena al aire libre para aprovechar el día de sol, después de haber tenido casi siempre días de lluvia, temperaturas bajas y mucho viento. Ya mañana comienzan los viajes de regreso. También el lunes y los días siguientes. Después de este bendecido tiempo de trabajo, de unión y de armonía, no queda otra que despedirse. Gracias de todo corazón, queridas Hermanas porque hemos sentido palpablemente el apoyo de su oraión, su cariño y presencia anónoma entre nosotras. Dios las bendiga y löes pague cada Ave María, con sus dones.

Personalmente me quedaré en Paderborn para hacer retiro sola, con la Hna. María Josefina, del 9 al 15 de agosto. Regresaremos a Roma juntas el 17. Luego la Hna. Adalberta viene de nuevo a Paderborn para el Jubileo, pues celebran también tres Hermanas de Roma: Sr. Clarentia, de nuestra comunidad de Villa Paolina, con Sr. Aloysima y Sr. Gertrude, del Campo Santo.

Queridas Hermanas, este es el último reportaje desde Paderborn. Espero que hayan podido acompañarnos, a través de estas cartas, en los distintos eventos que hemos realizado durante estas cuatro semanas. Han sido de intenso trabajo, de gran armonía y mucha confianza.

Sigamos adelante con valor porque aún hay mucho camino que recorrer en esta Tierra Sagrada que pisamos. El estilo de vida Eucarístico sea nuestra fuerza cada día de nuevo.

Dear Sisters,

Today we have come to the end of our 22nd General Chapter. It was a great grace to be together with our Sisters from the various countries to look at our life now and in the future. But we have only just begun! Now we must enflesh and bring to life our new Constitutions and the themes of the Chapter.

This past week began with the celebration of the Feast of St. Liborius. As I mentioned in last week’s letter, some Sisters had tickets for Saturday’s Vespers and some for Sunday’s Mass. A group of us went without tickets on Saturday. We were able to see the shrine carried in procession and to hear the Libori Tusch. Then we stayed for Vespers. Afterwards there was some time to visit the Libori Market. The weather this week was not good. We had rain almost every day, and heavy at times. On Sunday, for the first time in 38 years, they were not able to have the outdoor procession. Those of us who did not have tickets went to Mass here. Sister Mary Edward played the Libori Tusch on the organ. In the afternoon, the weather was a little better, so some made their way to the market. We had worked hard, so on Tuesday we stopped at 4 p.m. so that those who wished could go to the closing procession and those who had extra assignments would have time to do them. Sister Adalberta, Sister Maria del Rosario and I had good places to stand. The shrine passed right in front of us in procession.

But don’t let me fool you. It was not a week of celebration. We still had work to do. Renewals, On-going Formation, International Meetings, our Associates, approval of the Finance Report and the suggestions of the Finance Committee, Reconfiguration, the Chapter Document, Membership in or Collaboration with an NGO. All of these needed time to be reflected upon, spoken about in our groups and in plenary, and then, if necessary, voted upon. That each Sister must be convinced of her responsibility to herself, the community and her ministry for on-going formation was stressed. The need of various types of on-going formation for the Sisters because each has different needs was also spoken about at length. One topic that came up very frequently is the need for our Sisters to learn at least one other language of the Congregation. So I encourage you, especially those under 65, to make it a priority to learn either Spanish or German. You will not be sorry!

Everything during the Chapter was looked at in terms of MISSION. MISSION also has to be our guiding star as we look at the subject of reconfiguration. This topic has so many aspects that need to be studied and reflected upon to see what will best help the Congregation to serve the MISSION in the future. What is important is that we have a good understanding of the current theology of MISSION so we have a basis for further study. Have no fear. We are not rushing into anything. We are studying what would best suit our needs in terms of our MISSION. All will take time as we ask the Holy Spirit to lead us into the future.

Sister Joan Daniel and Sister Juliana gave a presentation on what it means to be a member of an NGO organization. They shared their experiences and those of others. This concept is new for some of the provinces so there was much discussion. All provinces are encouraged to learn more about these organizations. And any province may become associated with a religious NGO if it so desires.

I think you will really like the Chapter Document. The Sisters who worked on it did a superb job at synthesizing the different themes of the Chapter. It will give you both an understanding of how we worked these four weeks and also much to reflect upon and put into practice in your own life.

On Friday we signed the letter to our Companions of Pauline and took care of many little matters. In the afternoon, two of our translators, Sister Melissa and Sister Dominga reviewed the Chapter with us through a presentation they prepared. We don’t know where they found the time to do such a marvellous piece of work. And they made copies for each province also, so you have something to look forward to.

Auxiliary Bishop König celebrated the closing Liturgy on August 4. Msgr. Kresing and Father Tony concelebrated and the motherhouse community joined us. In the Entrance Procession we again carried the candles we used at the Opening Mass and which were lit during prayer throughout the Chapter. On each candle there was also a paper flame. At the Prayer of the Faithful, representatives of each province, the Generalate and the Philippines each prayed for the removal of darkness that is prevalent in the world and then took the paper flame and placed it on the map of the world that was on the lectern. It was a very meaningful, symbolic gesture. Bishop König’s homily was written just for us. I hope Sister Joan Daniel shares it with you. It fits the Chapter very well and gives us much to think about. Let me share just one sentence that struck me very much: “Religious fulfil their mandate, their mission, when they are there for God and when they let Christ shine through their life. They bring God into the world, radiating his presence by their being.”

Shortly after breakfast we began our last session. Beginning at the grave of Mother Pauline, we prayed her litany and sang “Hail to Our Dear Mother Foundress.” We then carried her light to the Chapter Room. Here Sister Adalberta thanked all who helped us and made some closing remarks. We then signed the three copies of the Chapter Document, one in each of our languages. Each participant in the Chapter then blessed each other. After a brief pause, we assembled in the motherhouse Chapel for the closing service and from there processed, carrying the plaques to be placed on the Peace Pole, to the courtyard where we prayed for peace in six languages: German, Spanish, English, Italian, Tagalog and Vietnamese. The German plaque also had a small plaque in Braille attached to it. Sister Maria Veronika screwed them onto the pole. Group pictures were then taken on the front steps of the Motherhouse.

The 22nd General Chapter is officially closed. Thank you for your prayerful support. Let us continue to pray for each other as we now try to live our eucharistic lifestyle each day so others really see us as a “Living Memory of Jesus way of living and acting.”

Now please pray for a safe flight for all our delegates. I know you will welcome the Sisters from Uruguay and Argentina when they visit on their way home. They are excited about their visit.
