Drei Tage vor ihrem Tod am 30. April 1881 richtete Mutter Pauline diese Worte an alle Schwestern:

"Herzliche, innige Liebe möge die Schwestern untereinander verbinden. ... Dabei möge doch jede nach wahrer, gründlicher Demut streben. Wenn wahre Demut, schwesterliche Liebe und rechter Gebetseifer in der Kongregation herrschen, dann dürfen wir auch auf den Segen Gottes hoffen."

Three days before Mother Pauline's death on April 30, 1881, she addressed these words to the Sisters:

"Sincere love should unite all the Sisters. ... At the same time, every one should strive to attain a true, sincere humility. If true humility, sisterly love, and an ardent spirit of prayer” reign, then we might expect God's blessing."

Tres días antes de su muerte el 30 de Abril de 1881, la Madre Paulina dirigió las siguientes palabras a las Hermanas:

"Que un amor íntimo y cordial una a todas las Hermanas. ... Al mismo tiempo cada una aspire a alcanzar una verdadera y profunda humildad. Si reinan en la Congregación verdadera humildad, amor fraternal y espíritu de oración, podremos esperar la bendición de Dios."

Dank, unaussprechlicher Dank dem lieben Gott für alle Gnaden, die er mir am Tage meiner Gelübdeablegung und in den vorhergehenden Exercitien verliehen. – Ich will mich dankbar zeigen, indem sie Früchte mit Gottes Gnade tragen sollen, die man in meinem Leben sieht. Vorzüglich will ich mit der Gnade Gottes mich befleißen, eine milde Nächstenliebe gegen die Schwestern, die Blinden u. alle Hausgenossen, alle Menschen zu tragen u. zu zeigen; - die Genossenschaft kräftig u. so recht gut zu leiten u. zu führen, auf daß sie wachse in Vollkommenheit. Gott wolle sie segnen (sie vernichten, wenn sie ihm missfällt; aber das glaube ich nicht, da der Segen der hl. Kirche auf ihr ruhet) drum wolle er sie in reichem Maße segnen, sie ausbreiten, wenn sie ihm gefällt, sich ihrer bedienen, wo es ihm gefällt, hineintreten lassen die Seelen, die er dazu auserlesen hat; - mir aber wolle er den richtigen Blick verleihen, daß ich den Beruf der Töchter richtig unterscheide, keine Berufene zurückweise, keine Unberufene hineinlasse. – Er gebe mir den hl. Geist, dann kann ich Alles. Er gebe mir u. uns Allen die Gnade, die hl. Regeln treu zu erfüllen und ihm zu gefallen alle Tage unsers Lebens.

Unending thanks be to God for all the graces on the day of my profession and during the preceding retreat.  I shall endeavor to prove my gratitude by a life of fruitful deeds.  Above all, may God help me to practice a tender charity toward the Sisters, the blind, and to all with whom I come in contact.  May He grant me wisdom and strength in directing and guiding the Congregation that it may advance steadily in perfection.  God bless it (or annihilate it if it displeases Him, but I do not think He will do that since the blessing of the Church rests upon it.)  So may He bless it abundantly and expand its growth if it please Him, use its services wherever they are needed, admit the souls whom He has destined to join it.  As for myself, may I be enlightened to judge rightly the vocation of my daughters so that none who are called may be rejected and none admitted who are not called.  May the Holy Spirit enlighten me, then I can do all things.  May He grant me and all of us the grace to observe the Holy Rule most faithfully every day of our lives.  Amen.

Gracias, infinitas gracias al Señor por todas las bendiciones que me ha concedido en el día de mi profesión, y durante los ejercicios que la precedieron. Me mostraré agradecida, procurando, con la ayuda de Dios, que estas gracias produzcan frutos visibles en toda mi vida. Me esforzaré sobre todo, con la gracia divina, en ejercitar una caridad benévola para con las Hermanas, los ciegos, todos los de casa y los extraños. Me empeñaré en dirigir y guiar bien y con valor la congregación, a fin de que crezca en perfección. Que Dios la bendiga o la destruya, si no le agrada; pero esto no lo creo, pues ella recibió la bendición de la santa Iglesia. Que la bendiga, pues, abundantemente; que ella se extienda, si así le agrada a Dios; que El se sirva de ella donde le agrade, y que atraiga a su seno las almas que le agrade.

„Dann lässt sie Ihnen noch einmal ans Herz legen, wozu sie uns so oft ermahnt, nämlich, dass doch eine jede dahin streben und nach Kräften dazu beitragen möge, dass stets ein guter Geist in der Kongregation herrsche … Herzliche, innige Liebe möge die Schwestern untereinander verbunden, und durch treue Pflichterfüllung möge jede Gott zu gefallen suchen. Dabei möge doch jede nach wahrer, gründlicher Demut streben. Wenn wahre Demut, schwesterliche Liebe, rechter Gebetseifer in der Kongregation herrschen, dann dürfen wir auch auf den Segen Gottes hoffen.“

The spiritual message of the new Blessed, Pauline von Mallinckrodt, can be summed up in a very relevant and concrete philosophy of life: to follow Christ unreservedly in unshakable faith; to love God and lovingly to dedicate oneself to the most lowly and poor, for the sake of Christ.

Mother Pauline von Mallinckrodt had many natural gifts: a simple, friendly character; confidence and trust in others; perseverance in pursuing her goals; enduring fidelity to the fundamental choices of her life - even in trials and great difficulties - and a sense of sacrifice, by which she magnanimously sought to give of herself unreservedly to everyone.

These rich gifts with which God so liberally endowed her were completed by a deep and developed spirit of faith. This gift of grace, which she received at Baptism, developed wonderfully under the guidance of her mother and her teachers. She grew up in the peaceful environment of a family in which love and mutual respect ruled, in a climate which nevertheless was not without silent suffering, because her parents belonged to different confessions: her mother was a believing Catholic and her father a convinced Protestant. With the help of grace, Pauline's fidelity to the Lord was strengthened as she carne to terms with this situation.

However, there was also a period of crisis in her youth, a time of great anguish, full of scruples, anxieties and uncertainties. She could overcome these only by entrusting herself fully and completely to God in deep and constant prayer. And God was near to her and illumined her soul with such a clear light of faith that it can rightly be called a special "grace of faith". This new vision, given her by God, allowed her to exclaim: "I was so penetrated by this clear and solid faith that I would have believed it rather than my own eyes.”

As a contemporary of hers testifies, this faith made Pauline's character a whole - clear and transparent as light, and just as simple (cf. Schlüter). Thus already at the age of eighteen she was able to recognize with unequivocal certainty that her purpose in life was determined by a special call from God.

Hers was a conscious and courageous faith. It allowed her to endure pain, bitterness and many trials, and it showed itself in her complete and unreserved love for Jesus Christ and his Mother Mary. Full of confidence and trust she left herself in their hands. Striving for God and his greater glory she grew in grace, for she constantly drew strength from prayer in the context of a profound eucharistic life.

Her love of neighbor grew naturally and spontaneously from her love of God. With great tenderness she devoted herself to unfortunate blind children, to whom she wished to give an inner light, a ray of the divine light. She founded her Congregation of the Sisters of Christian Charity for this service of love for the sake of Christ. "Together with these children she took charge of other people who were in need of help: in her and her foundation everyone found help, consolation, and above all love. This same love made her also include education of youth among the tasks of her Congregation. She believed that this was a true missionary work, especially required by the needs of the time.

Her plans were daring; but she knew how to wait in quiet and humble restraint for the time which God would choose. Her work grew successful, though only amid continual struggles and difficulties. The time of its greatest growth also saw the coming of a destructive storm, persecution under the laws of the Kulturkampf. But here too Mother Pauline showed her interior openness to the will of God and was ready and able to encounter trials, and make her Way of the Cross.

The life of Mother Pauline is an example to us. In answer to the anxious unrest of modern man she shows us a way to inner peace: by courageously and trustingly seeing God in one's suffering brother and sister. Thus her message has relevance today too, for the search for God is always relevant.

El mensaje espiritual de la nueva Beata Paulina von Mallinckrodt podemos resumirlo en un programa de vida muy actual y concreto: seguimiento de Cristo sin reservas y con una fe inquebrantable, amor de Dios y entrega amorosa a los más desgraciados y pobres, por amor a Cristo.

La Madre Paulina von Mallinckrodt fue rica en dones naturales: persona sencilla y cercana, apertura y confianza hacia los semejantes, motivación en la realización de sus proyectos; confianza segura en las decisiones fundamentales de su vida – incluso en medio de las pruebas y las dificultades – y un espíritu de sacrifico, con el que buscó entregarse de corazón y sin reservas a todos.

Estos preciosos dones, que Dios le había confiado con tanta generosidad, fueron llevados a la perfección a través de un profundo y marcado espíritu de fe. Este regalo de la gracia, que había recibido en el bautismo, lo desarrolló admirablemente bajo la guía de su madre y de sus maestros y maestras. Creció en el ámbito lleno de libertad de una familia, en la que reinaba el amor y el respeto mutuo, en un colima, que, sin embargo, no se vio completamente libre di sufrimientos silenciosos a causa de las diferencias confesiones de los padres: la madre, una católica practicante; el padre, un protestante convencido. Con la ayuda de la gracia, se consolidó la confianza de Paulina en el Señor, al verse afrontada con esta situación.

Pasó, en su juventud, por un período crítico, un tiempo de gran tormento, lleno de escrúpulos, ansiedades e inseguridades que supo, no obstante, vencer confiándose por entero a Dios, en oración profunda y constante. Y Dios, que le estaba cercano, iluminó su alma con una claridad de fe tal que se puede llamar con razón una especial “gracia de la fe”. Gracias a esta iluminación que Dios le concedió, pudo exclamar: Esta fe me penetró tan fuerte y claramente, que la creó más que a mis propios ojos.

La fe hizo Paulina, como lo atestigua un contemporáneo, una persona hecha y derecha, clara y transparente como la luz, y al mismo tiempo sencilla, de modo que ya a los dieciocho años reconoció con clara conciencia la meta de su vida en una especial llamada de Dios.

Fue consciente y valiente la fe con la que supo afrontar sufrimientos, amarguras y pruebas de todo tipo, y que manifestó en su amor completo y sin reservas a Jesucristo y a su Madre maría, a los que se abandonó confiada y sencillamente. Creció en la gracia, anhelando siempre a Dios y su mayor gloria; se fortaleció progresivamente en la fuente de la oración, en una profunda vida eucarística.

De su amor a Dios manó natural y espontáneamente su amor a los demás. Se dedicó con gran ternura a los niños ciegos, a quienes quiso regalar l luz interior como destello de la luz divina. Para este servicio amoroso por amor a Cristo fundó su Congregación de las Hermanas de la Caridad Cristiana. Junto a aquellos niños acogió a otros necesitados; todos encontraron en ella en su gran obra de ayuda, el consuelo y, sobre todo, el amor. El mismo amor la empujó a asumir para su Congregación la formación de la juventud; lo consideró un auténtica misión, al descubrir que se los pedían de manera especial las exigencias de los tiempos.

Audaces eran los planes de la Beata; pero ella supo esperar con recato silencioso y confiado la hora de Dios. Su obra creció con éxito, aunque en medio de continuos problemas y con muchas dificultades. En el tiempo de su mayor crecimiento sobrevino la hora de la demoledora tormenta con la dura persecución bajo la ley de los conflictos político-religiosos. Pero también en este momento la Madre Paulina manifestó su apertura a la voluntad de Dios mostrándose preparada y dispuesta a soportar las pruebas y a recorrer su vía crucis.

La Madre Paulina es un ejemplo de vida. A la angustiosa inquietud del hombre moderno ella señala un camino de paz interior: buscar animosa y confiadamente a Dios en los hermanos que sufren. Por eso su mensaje es actual, en la medida que es siempre actual la búsqueda de Dios.
